Team Philippines 🇵🇭 | Vanessa Sarno

 

The 20-year old Sarno qualified to the Paris Olympic Games after securing one of the top ten weightlifters in the women's 71kg division based on the IWF Olympic Qualification Rankings (OQR).

 

Sarno competed in the World Championships, Asian Games and IWF World Cup. 

 

She is a two-time Southeast Asian Games gold medalist - 2021 SEA Games (71kg) and 2023 SEA Games (71kg) and gold medalist in the 2020 Asian Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

 

This is Sarno's Olympic debut and will see action on August 10 at around 1:30 in the afternoon (Manila Time). 

Team Philippines 🇵🇭 | John Ceniza

 

The 26-year old Ceniza qualified to the Paris Olympic Games after securing one of the top ten weightlifters in the men's 61kg division based on the IWF Olympic Qualification Rankings (OQR).

 

Ceniza competed in the World Championships, Asian Games and IWF World Cup. 

 

He is a silver medalist in Southeast Asian Games - 2019 SEA Games (55kg) and 2023 SEA Games (61kg). He also bagged a bronze medal in IWF World Cup in 2020.

 

This is Ceniza's Olympic debut and will see action on August 7 at around 9pm in the evening (Manila Time).

Team Philippines 🇵🇭 | Elreen Ando

 

The 25-year old Ando qualified to the Paris Olympic Games after securing one of the top ten weightlifters in the women's 59kg division based on the IWF Olympic Qualification Rankings (OQR).

 

This is Ando's second consecutive appearance in the Summer Olympics following her Tokyo Olympics debut in 2020 where she competed in the women's 64kg division.

 

Ando competed in the World Championships, Asian Games and IWF World Cup. 

 

She is a bronze medalist in the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games (64kg), gold medalist in 2023 SEA Games (64kg) and silver medalist in the 2024 Asian Championships (59kg).

 

The competition in the women's 59kg division is on August 8 at around 9pm in the evening (Manila Time).

#SEAGames2021 News 054 | Philippines will Compete in Weightlifting with 13 Athletes

 

 

Spearheaded by Philippines' first ever Olympic gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz, the Philippines will compete in weightlifting at the 31st Southeast Asian Games in Vietnam.

The Philippine weightlifting team will send 13 athletes which is composed of 6 male and 7 female weightlifters.

Competing for the women's events are Mary Flor Diaz (45 kg), Rosegie Ramos (49 kg), Hidilyn Diaz (55 kg), Margaret Colonia (59 kg), Elreen Ann Ando (64 kg), Vanessa Sarno (71 kg), and Kristel Macrohon (+71 kg).

 

Meanwhile, competing for the men's division are Fernando Agad Jr. (55 kg), Rowel Garcia (61 kg), Nestor Colonia (67 kg), Lemon Denmark Tarro (73 kg), John Paul Padullo (89 kg), and John Dexter Tabique (+89 kg). 

 

The Philippines is aiming for four (4) to five (5) gold medals in weightlifting with minimum target of two gold medals. 

 

The weightlifting competition will be held in Hanoi from May 19 to 22 with 14 events.

 

At the 2019 SEA Games in Manila, the team Philippines collected 7 medals including the two gold medals.

 

 

SEA Games 2019 News 036: PH Weightlifters Training Abroad

Host Philippines is ready to challenge weightlifting powerhouses Indonesia and Vietnam as series of training and competitions are inlined going to the 30th Southeast Asian Games.

Leading the squad of weightlifters is 2016 Rio de Janiero Olympic silver medalist Hidilyn Diaz who is now in China for two-month training. 

Diaz is training for the upcoming Asian Championships to be held in Ningbo, China which will start on the 17th of April to 28th. She will compete in the women's -55kg event.

Other weightlifters who are going to join Diaz at the Asian Championships are Mary Flor Diaz (45kg), Rosegie Ramos (49kg), Margaret Colonia (59kg), Elreen Anne Ando (64kg) and Kristel Macrohon (71kg) in the women’s category

Joining the women's team are John Fabuar Ceniza (55kg), Nestor Colonia (61kg), Jeff Garcia (67kg) and John Dexter Tabique (81kg) for the men's events.

As for Diaz and other lifters, they need to collect points by joining more qualifying competitions to get ticket to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Other competition in which some of them may join is the world championships to be hosted by Thailand.

Thailand as reported will not send weightlifters to any Olympic qualifying events for weightlifting because of doping issue unless the case is resolved.   

Aside from the 10 mentioned Filipino weightlifters, few more athletes are still vying to join the squad for the SEA Games 2019. 

 

SEA Games 2019 News 028: No SEA Games for Thai Weightlifters Yet

Weightlifting is one of the sports which produced medals for Thailand in world championships and even in Olympics.

But things might change because of the Thai lifters' doping results. 

Thailand's weightlifters are unsure of getting go signal to compete in international tournaments.

For the meantime, Thailand Amateur Weightlifting Association (TAWA) has decided not to send anyone to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics or to any qualifying competitions.

The decision was made after eight Thai weightlifters were tested positive for banned substances at last year's world championships in Turkmenistan.

This includes Olympic gold medalists Sopita Tanasan (48kg) and Sukanya Srisurat (58kg).

All athletes had undergone tests in Thailand before going to Turkmenistan and the Thai anti-doping agency did not find any traces of banned substances.

However, they will still not field any weightlifters to international competitions until the case is resolved.

At the 30th Southeast Asian Games, weightlifting offers 10 gold medals and  the event likewise serves as an Olympic qualifying competition according to source.

According to tournament results in weightlifting, host country might only banking on Olympic silver medalist Hidilyn Diaz and the rest are up for grabs for other countries like Indonesia and Vietnam.

If  TAWA made it final not to send athletes to tournaments abroad including SEA Games, however it still intends to host the World Championships that will happen on September 18 to 27.

Vietnam Successful at World Weightlifting Championships for Youth

Vietnam is the sole Southeast Asian nation who sent 4 athletes at the 2019 IWF Youth World Championships held in Las Vegas, Nevada from March 8 to 15.

Leading team Vietnam was DO Tu Tung who set a new youth world record in Snatch at 95kg in his second attempt.

He continued setting a new youth world  record in the Clean and Jerk at 125kg with a total lift of 220kg, which is also a youth world record.

Do won 3 gold medals and hailed as a new youth world champion in the men's 49kg event.

Vietnam also bagged medals in the men's 61kg category by virtue of BUI Dinh Sang who won gold in snatch at 113kg and won a bronze medal with a total lift of 243kg.

The last man to compete for Vietnam is VUONG Truong Khoi. He competed in the men's 81kg category. He emerged 4th place overall and lifted a total weight of 281kg.

In the women's event, it was NGUYEN Thi Thu Trang who won three gold medals in the 45kg category.

She lifted 66 kg in the snatch and 75kg in the clean & jerk for a total of 141 kg.

Last February, Vietnamese lifters Vuong Thi Huyen and Lai Gia Thanh won the women’s 45kg and men’s 55kg respectively at the 2019 IWF World Cup which is a qualification tournament for Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

SEA Weightlifters Shine at Olympic Qualifying Event

Indonesian weightlifter Eko Yuli Irawan took home a gold medal in the men's 61kg at the 2019 IWF World Cup held in Fuzhou, Fujian province of China from  February 22 to 27.

Eko who won a gold and two silver medals lifted a total of 297kg in total, 136 kilograms in snatch and 161 kilograms in clean and jerk.

Silver medal went to Vietnamese weightlifter Thach Kim Tuan who lifted 295 kilograms in total.

In the men's 67kg category, Deni of Indonesia won a bronze medal by lifting 305 kilograms in total consisting of 135 kilograms in snatch and 170 kilograms in clean and jerk.

Meanwhile, Vietnamese lifters Vuong Thi Huyen and Lai Gia Thanh won the women’s 45kg and men’s 55kg.

The event is a qualification tournament for Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

🏋️‍ Youth Indonesia Weightlifting Championships 2018

The Youth Indonesia Weightlifting Championships was held at the Gor Ngurah Rai venue in Denpasar, Bali from July 29 to August 6.

160 participants from Southeast Asian countries like the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and host Indonesia. 

Thailand dominated in all categories they competed while host Indonesia and the Philippines has seen potential future weightlifters.

Philippines won  4 gold, 5 silver and 3 bronze medals. 

Bringing medals for team Philippines were Vanessa Serrano who garnered 3 gold medals while Zamboanga City’s Rosegie Ramos has a gold and a pair of silvers. Linette Hipolito, also from Zamboanga, took home 3 silver medals, and Paolo Rivera of Metro Manila earned 3 bronze medals. 

🏋️‍ Asian Youth & Junior Weightlifting Championships 2018

The Asian Youth & Junior Weightlifting Championships 2018 was held at the Yoshlik sport complex in Urgench, Uzekistan from April 20 to 30. 

The competition was also a qualifying event for the upcoming 2018 Youth Olympic Games to be held in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Southeast Asian teams who competed at this tournament were Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.

Vietnam is the biggest winner among the Southeast Asian teams who collected 18 gold medals in both youth and junior categories.

🏋️ World Weightlifting Championships 2017

The World Weightlifting Championships 2017 was held in Anaheim, United States from 28 November to December 5.

Bagging the first title for Southeast Asia was weightlifter from Vietnam. Kim Tuan Thach took the gold medal in the Men’s 56kg bodyweight category with a total lift of 279kg. His lift in snatch was 126kg while in clean & jerk, he lifted 153kg. 

His compatriot Le Quoc Toan Tran took the silver medal with a total lift of 270kg while Thailand's Witoon Mingmoon won the bronze medal with 267kg lift in the same event.

Thailand is the big winner  from Southeast Asia. With the absence of Indonesia in the tournament, Thailand won couple of medals including Sopita Tanasan who won gold in the women's 53kg event, Tairat Bunsuk in men's 69kg event with a silver medal, Thunya Sukcharoen in women's 48kg (silver) and Sukanya Srisurat (silver medal) in women's 58kg event . 

The Philippines also made it to the medal board courtesy of 2016 Rio Olympics silver medalist Hidilyn Diaz by snatching bronze medal in the women's 53kg event.

Asian Senior Cup & Asian Inter-Club Weightlifting Championships 2017

The 2017 Asian Cup and Asian Inter-Club Weightlifting Championships was held at the Yongha Weightlifting Gymnasium in Yanggu County, Gangwon Province in South Korea. The said tournaments ran from the 28th of October to the 2nd of November. 

The competition featured 16 bodyweight categories - 8 for males and 8 for females.

Southeast Asian countries are known for this sport especially in the Olympics. Weightlifting became a source of medals for the ASEAN region. 

 And slowly getting into the rosters of champion from Southeast Asian is the Philippines.

Filipino weightlifter Elien Rose Perez won three gold medals by lifting 71 kgs. in snatch and 87 kgs. in clean and jerk to sweep of her event in the women's 53kg class. 

Also sharing a spotlight was Maria Dessa Santos who won six medals in the women's 58kg event. She managed to collect three silver medals in Asian Inter-club Championships and three bronze medals at the Asian Cup.

Bagging three more bronze medals for the Philippines was Elreen Ando in the women's 63kg category. She placed third in all disciplines - the snatch, clean & jerk and for the overall lift. 

All-in-all, a total of 12 medals was captured by the Philippine team at this championships - 3 gold, 3 silver and 6 bronze medals from three strong women.  All them could be a successful Olympian after Hidilyn Diaz who won silver medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

🏋️ Asian Junior & Youth Weightlifting Championships 2017

The Asian Junior & Youth Weightlifting Championships 2017 was held in Kathmandu, Nepal from July 21 to July 29 with eight (8) weight classes each for men's and women's division for junior and youth categories.

Southeast Asian weightlifters from Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines, Singapore and Myanmar took part of this youthful competition.

Thailand is the big winner collecting 13 gold, 14 silver and 12 bronze medals while Vietnam also collected couple of medals including 4 gold, 11 silver and 13 bronze medals. The Philippines also made it to the medal board by bagging three bronze medals.

🏋️‍ 2017 IWF Junior World Championships

The 2017 IWF Junior World Championships was held in Tokyo, Japan from June 15 to June 23. 

Only Thailand and Vietnam from Southeast Asia competed in this World Championships. 

Both nations collected medals in this competition.

Vietnam's Gia Thanh Lai won the silver medal in men's 56kg event lifting a total weight of 249kg.  Lai also landed second place in the snatch division and got first place in the clean & jerk. 

Meanwhile, Thailand celebrated when Thunya Sukcharoen won the gold medal  in the women's 48kg. She topped in both snatch and clean & jerk divisions among 13 competitors. Next to her is her fellow compatriot Chiraphan Nanthawong winning silver medal. Nanthawong placed 3rd in snatch and 2nd place in the clean & jerk. 

Meanwhile, Rattanaphon Pakkaratha won the bronze medal in the women's 58kg category. She placed 4rd in the snatch while she got the first place in the clean & jerk routine.

Lastly, Duangaksorn Chaidee clinched the silver medal in the women's +90kg category. She lifted a total of 260kg. She placed 3rd in the snatch while she placed 2nd in the clean & jerk.
