Vietnam To Send MMA Fighters for 2025 SEA Games

 

Vietnam will send its MMA fighters for the 2025 Southeast Asian Games in Thailand. Vietnam’s Mixed Martial Arts Federation (VMMAF) has announced selection tournaments that will be conducted. 

 

The first one is MMA Championship 2025 which will kick off on April 12, while the National MMA Club Cup 2025 is set to take place from June 23 to June 29 in Hanoi.

 

The results from these tournaments will determine Vietnam’s MMA representatives for SEA Games 2025. There was no mention of the specific sport where their MMA fighters will contest.

 

Four SEA Judokas in Paris Olympics

 

Four Southeast Asian judokas will compete in Paris Olympics this coming July after continental quotas are awarded to them.

 

These athletes are Kiyomi Watanabe of the Philippines in the Women's -63kg,

Maryam March Maharani of Indonesia (Women's -52kg), Hoàng Thị Tình of Vietnam (Women's -48kg) and Masayuki Terada of Thailand (Men's -73kg).

 

 

3 SEA Athletes Qualify To Paris Olympics 2024

 

Southeast Asian athletes started the year with good results as three shooters bagged qualification quotas at the 2024 Asian Rifle & Pistol Championships held in Jakarta, Indonesia from January 5 to 18. 

 

Host Indonesia qualifies one athlete courtesy of Fathur Gustafian in the 10m Air Rifle Men event. Gustafian placed 4th in the finals of the said event.

 

Meanwhile, Le Thi Mong Tuyen from Vietnam finished 5th place in the 10m Air Rifle Women event and secured Olympic ticket to Paris this year.

 

The last to qualify from Southeast Asian region is Thongphaphum Vongsukdee of Thailand who won bronze medal in the 50m Rifle 3 Position Men event. Vongsukdee secured one of the two quota places for Paris Olympics 2024.

 

Aside from the Asian Rifle & Pistol Championship in Jakarta, Kuwait is also hosting an Asian Championships (shotgun) which is also a qualification phase for Paris Olympics. As of now, no athletes from the SEA region qualifies in Kuwait tournament.

Vietnam will participate in the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China with 337 athletes competing in 31 sports.

The delegation will compete in swimming, athletics, weightlifting, shooting, gymnastics, archery, rowing, canoeing, sepak takraw, chess, chess, table tennis, tennis, karate, boxing, judo, taekwondo. 

 

Vietnam will also compete in wrestling, wushu, jujitsu, kurash, fencing, roller sports, volleyball, golf, badminton, handball, e-sports, soft tennis, breaking dance and soccer.

 

As per source, Vietnam is targeting to win two to five gold medals and they are expecting it from chess, shooting, karate, cycling, weightlifting, sepak takraw and archery. But as per scouting, Vietnam can also produce medals from athletics, swimming, artistic gymnastics (MAG) and taekwondo.

 

At the last Asiad in Palembang, Vietnam bagged 5 gold medals coming from athletics, pencak silat and rowing.

A Brave Start for Vietnam at FIFA World Cup

Vietnam made its first ever appearance in the FIFA Women's World Cup at the Eden Park, Auckland on July 22 to take its its first match against 4-time FIFA World Cup champion United States.

Vietnam which is in Group E is defeated by a very strong United States, 3-0. Despite losing to reigning champion US, the Vietnamese team showed a brave performance which won the hearts of Vietnamese fans around the world.

 

Two goals were scored by Sophia Smith in the first half and another by captain Lindsey Horan in the second half to seal United States' victory.

 

Vietnam's next match is against Portugal on July 27 and Netherlands on August 1.

2023 Asian Athletics Championships

 

Southeast Asian athletes had a successful campaign at the recently concluded Asian Athletics Championships 2023 held in Bangkok, Thailand from July 12 to 16.

The competition was dominated by Japan that collected 16 gold medals followed by China with 8 golds and India with six gold medals.

Leading our Southeast Asian athletes was Veronica Shanti Pereira of Singapore who raked two gold medals in the century dash and in the 200m run. Aside from winning gold medals, the fastest women in Asia established new national record and new meet record.

Pereira posted 11.20s in the 100m run, a new Singapore record and 22.70s in the women's 200m to set a new Asian Championships record.

Meanwhile, Philippines also recorded two gold medals courtesy of Robyn Lauren Brown in the women's 400m hurdles with a time of 57.50s and from 2024 Paris Olympic qualifier Ernest John Obiena in the men's pole vault. Obiena who was favorite to win the gold medal set a new meet record of 5.91m.

Vietnam also snatched a gold medal in the women's 4x400m relay run. The team is composed of Thi Ngoc Nguyen, Thi Minh Hanh Hoang, Thi Huyen Nguyen and Thi Hang Nguyen who clocked 3:32.36.

 

Host Thailand did not fail their supporters by clinching the lobe gold medal in the men's 4x100m relay event. Natawat Iamudom, Soraoat Dapbang, Chayut Khongprasit and Puripol Boonson clocked 38.55s and established a new meet record. 

Asude from the mentioned gold medalists, some of our Southeast Asian athletes also won medals in this Asian championships. These are Tawan Kaeodam of Thailand (men's high jump - bronze); Muhammad Irfan Bin Shamshuddin of Malaysia (men's discus throw - bronze) and Sutthisak Singkhon of Thailand (men's decathlon - silver).

 

In the women's side, Nguyễn Thị Hường of Vietnam (triple jump - bronze), Chayanisa Chomchuendee of Thailand (pole vault - bronze), Subenrat Insaeng of Thailand (discus throw - bronze) and Thailand's Supawan Thipat, Supanich Poolkerd, On-Uma Chattha and Athicha Phetkun in the 4x100m run (bronze).

 

Philippines and Singapore shared in 6th place in the medal tally while host Thailand ended in 10th place, Vietnam in 13th and Malaysia in 17th place.

The 24th edition of the Asian Athletics Championships was held at Supachalasai National Stadium that featured 45 events participated by more than 40 Asian countries.

 

 

SEA Teams Dominated Asian Women's Challenge Cup

Southeast Asian teams dominated the 2023 Asian Women's Volleyball Challenge Cup which was held at the Tridharma Sports Hall in Gresik, East Java, Indonesia from June 18 to 25 with eleven competing teams.

Vietnam  captured the 4th AVC Challenge Cup title after defeating host Indonesia in the finals, 25-18, 25-27, 21-25, 25-20, 15-13. This is Vietnam's second gold medal at an Asian-level after winning the Women's Club Volleyball Championship last May.

 

Aside from powerhouse Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia are beginning to make names in the women's volleyball not only in Southeast Asia but in Asia. 

 

The victory of Vietnam and Indonesia proves that they can be named as the Elite 3 Teams of Women's Volleyball in Southeast Asia together with Thailand. These three teams also hold the top three positions in the last 18 years of women's volleyball in the Southeast Asian Games.

Individual Awardees

 

Aside from gold and silver medals, some of Vietnam and Indonesian players were given individual awards. 

 

Three players from Vietnam were awarded. These are Trần Thị Thanh Thúy (Most Valuable Player and Best Outside spiker), Đoàn Thị Lâm Oanh (Best Setter) and Đinh Thị Trà Giang (Best Middle Blocker)

For Indonesia, Wilda Nurfadhilah was awarded Best Middle Blocker, Megawati Hangestri Pertiwi (Best Opposite Spiker) and Yulis Indahyani as Best Libero.

 

Meanwhile, Philippines also competed in this event and finished in 7th place overall.

#SEAGames2023 | Vietnam 🇻🇳 Taekwondo Team

Twenty-one athletes will represent Vietnam in Taekwondo at the 32nd Southeast Asian Games in Cambodia. 

Taekwondo will be held at Hall F in Chroy Changvar Convention Center from May 12 to May 15.

 

At the last SEA Games, the team won a total of 16 medals including the eight gold medals to top the taekwondo medal tally.

Below are the list of athletes that will represent Vietnam in athletics for the 32nd Southeast Asian Games in Cambodia. The team is composed of 51 strong athletes.

At the last SEA Games, Vietnam ruled the track and field events with 22 gold medals. They will try to maintain their supremacy in athletics and improve their performance in Cambodia.

Athletics is one of the sports that offers big number of medals. It is scheduled to take place at the Morodok Techo Stadium from May 8 to 12.

#SEAGames2023 News | Vietnam Volleyball Training Pool for Cambodia

The Vietnam Volleyball Federation has summoned coaches and athletes to the Vietnamese team in preparation for the 32nd Southeast Asian Games in Cambodia.

Thirty-seven athletes are being summoned for the national training pool (18 males and 19 females) even though there is an ongoing national volleyball championship.

 

Below are the athletes summoned for the national team of Vietnam.

 

 

Pham Van Nghiep and Nguyen Dinh Lap are the coaches listed for this national training pool.

However according to source, there is no tentative list of the two national teams and will be announced after the 2023 Hung Vuong Cup ends. 

 

 

🚴 CYCLING | BTV Cycling Tournament – Number One Cup

The Binh Duong Television (BTV) Cup commenced last January 5 with participating local cyclists of Vietnam with foreign reinforcements. The tournament known as The Number One Cup will run with 7 stages has attracted cyclists from club teams of the Philippines and Korea.

On day of the event, Jang Kyunggu of Korea was the Stage 1 winner clocking 2:24.20 on 137km from New Bình Dương City of Bình Dương Province to Phước Long Town of Bình Phước Province. He is ahead of his teammate Jun Jaebin while Roman Maikin of Lộc Trời An Giang came at third place.

 

Meanwhile, Jude Gabriel Francisco of 7-Eleven Road Bike Philippines emerged as the best U23cyclist in the 137km stage.

 

The second stage will be a 128km from Gia Nghĩa City in Đắk Nông Province to Buôn Ma Thuột City in Đắk Lắk. 

 

The event is use as preparation of the Vietnamese cyclists for future events such as the Southeast Asian Games and other international competitions.

PH tops Asian Juniors Chess Tourney

Host Philippines topped the medal tally of the recently concluded Asian Juniors & Girls Chess Championship 2022. 

The 2022 Asian Juniors & Girls Chess Championship took place in Tagaytay City, Philippines from November 17 to 26 with 52 players from 11 countries.

 

The Philippines won 6 gold medals followed by Kazakhstan with 4 gold medals. India came 3rd overall with 3 gold medals while Vietnam settled 4th overall with 2 gold medals. Iran and Kyrgyzstan each captured one gold medal at the end of the tournament.

Other Southeast Asian countries who competed in the event were Malaysia, and Indonesia who captured one bronze medal in the rapid junior event.

Team Singapore is in Group C while Thailand, Malaysia & Vietnam are in Group D.

PH wins Beach Handball title in Korea

The Philippines swept all its match to capture the 2022 Korea Beach Handball Festival title. The 3-nation beach handball festival was held at the Yangyang Naksan Beach, South Korea with having two teams.

Team Philippines first defeated Korea-A followed by Korea-B and on the final day defeated their SEA 

Games rival Vietnam.

Southeast Asia at the 2022 World Athletics U20 (Junior) Championships

Five Southeast Asian countries participated at the 2022 World Athletics U20 (Junior) Championships held in Cali, Colombia scheduled from August 1 to 6. These nations were Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

 

Our Southeast Asian athletes made an impressive results as two of our sprinters reached the men's 100m finals event.

 

Puripol Boonsoon of Thailand finished 4th in the finals clocking 10.12s while Malaysia's Muhd Azeem Fahmi in 5th place with a time of 10.14s.

In other event, Mohamad Shah Sholihin Azshar of Malaysia finished 9th in Group B of men's triple jump. He jumped 14.76m to place 19th overall and did not advance to the finals.

 

Indonesia's Dina Aulia advanced to the semifinals after clocking 13.44s and ruling the women's 100m hurdles prelim heat 2. She now registered a new national record for Indonesia (U20) in the said event.

However in the semifinals, she clocked the same time and barely missed to enter the finals as she placed 9th in the semis.

 

Du Y Hoang of Vietnam finished 45th overall in the women's 100m event with a time of 11.95s. She did not advance to the next round.

 

Elvin Yap Zhi Xian of Malaysia clocked 13.91s (PB) in Heat 7 of men's 110m hurdles enough to advance into the semifinals. Unfortunately, his time of 14.92 in the semifinals failed him to advance in the finals. But still a good job. 

 

A total of 8 athletes from Southeast Asia competed in the 2022 Juniors Championships with Malaysia having the most number of athletes (3).  

 

 

 

#SEAGames2021 News 060 | Vietnam Relying on Experienced Wushu Athletes

Wushu is one of the forty (40) sports that will be featured in the 31st Southeast Asian Games in Vietnam.

 

Host Vietnam has sixteen (16) wushu athletes that will take part of the SEA Games competition to be held at Cầu Giấy Sporting Hall in Hanoi.

 

The team is composed of seven (7) male and nine (9) female wushu athletes.

 

Vietnam will rely on experienced wushu athletes. Most notable among the sixteen are Duong Thuy Vi and Pham Quoc Khanh.

 

Vietnamese male and female players for the sanda events had training sessions in the central Da Nang City, which are preparing for their SEA Games action at the Cau Giay Gymnasium in Hanoi.

 

The wushu competition will commence on May 13 and will close on May 15 with 21 events including 8 in sanda and 13 events in taolu. 

 

Vietnam collected twelve (12) medals at the 2019 SEA Games in the Philippines which includes the 3 gold medals - one in taolu and two in sanda events.

Vietnam women's football team intensifies its training in preparation for the 31st Southeast Asian Games.

 

The team which is composed of 26 players left for Korea and will have a friendly matches against the national football team of Korea.

Aside from its friendly matches that will be held on April 9 and on April 11, team Vietnam will have four more friendly matches against strong local female teams on April 13, 15, 17 and 19.

 

The women's team of Vietnam is in Group A in the 31st SEA Games together with the Philippines, Indonesia and Cambodia. While Group B is comprised of Thailand, Myanmar, Singapore and Laos.

Vietnam's first assignment is against Indonesia on May 9, the Philippines on May 11 and Cambodia on May 14.

 

Team Vietnam is the defending SEA Games champion.
