2023 World Taekwondo Championships

Three Thai taekwondo jins so far delivered medal from Southeast Asia at the 2023 World Taekwondo Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan. 

Panapik Wongpattanakit settled for silver medal after losing to Merve Dincel of Turkey in the women's -49kg finals, 0-0, 2-4, 4-11.Panapik is the 2020 Tokyo Olympic gold medalist in the said event.

 

 

 

Another Thai jin who brought medal is Banlung Tubtimdang. He settled for silver medal after losing to Hakan Recber of Turkey in the men's -63kg finals. Prior to the finals, Tubtimdang defeated Joan Jorquera Cala of Spain in the semifinals.

 

 

 

Kamonchanok Seeken gives Thailand its 3rd silver medal. Seeken settles for silver after losing to Croatia's Lena Stojkovic in the women's -49kg finals.

#SEAGames2023 | Vietnam 🇻🇳 Taekwondo Team

Twenty-one athletes will represent Vietnam in Taekwondo at the 32nd Southeast Asian Games in Cambodia. 

Taekwondo will be held at Hall F in Chroy Changvar Convention Center from May 12 to May 15.

 

At the last SEA Games, the team won a total of 16 medals including the eight gold medals to top the taekwondo medal tally.

#SEAGames2023 | Indonesia Targets 2 Golds in Taekwondo

Indonesia is targeting to win at least two gold medals in taekwondo at the 32nd Southeast Asian Games in Cambodia. 

They will rely on four taekwondo athletes whom they think can best delivery the gold medals for the red and white flag. 

 

These athletes are Kadek Heni Prikasih in the women's -46kg, Silvana Lamanda in the women's -67kg, Muhammad Bassam Raihan in men's -63kg and Osanando Naufal Khairudin Men -80kg.

 

The Indonesia taekwondo team competed in the 2023 Bulgaria Open that was held in Sofia from March 3 to 5 where they bagged a gold medal courtesy of Ni Kadek Heni Prikasih in women's -46kg event.

 

Also, some of its athletes competed in Thailand last February and in ASEAN Taekwondo Championships in Manila last March. They are said to have trained also in Serbia where they got along with the Greek, Russian and German teams.

 

The result in Bulgaria and the training in Serbia serves as a motivation to achieve the best result in the 32nd SEA Games in Cambodia. The taekwondo competition is going to take place at the Chroy Changvar Convention Centre Hall F from May 12 to May 15.

Philippines won medals in Korea Open

The Philippine national taekwondo team raked medals at the 2022 Chuncheon Korea Open. 

 

In Kyorugi event, Kurt Bryan Barbosa snatch the bronze medal in the Men -54kg category while in the women's side, Laila Delo also won bronze medal in the Women -67kg division.

In poomsae competition, Rodolfo Reyes Jr. won bronze medal recognized poomsae individual male U30 while Jocelyn Ninobla won silver medal in the women's recognized poomsae individual U30.

 

Aside from the athletes mentioned, below are the Filipino jins who were successful in their campaign. 

 

 

 

SEA Taekwondo Athletes Qualified for Tokyo Olympics

 

Additional three athletes will don the pride of Southeast Asia as three countries successfully won tickets to the quadrennial meet in Tokyo. 

Taekwondo athletes from all over Asia gathered in Amman, Jordan for 16 Olympic slots from 8 divisions (4 for male and 4 female).

Winning the ticket on the first day was Vietnam's Trương Thị Kim Tuyến in the women's -49kg. She qualified after winning over Kazkhstan's Fariza Aldangorova in the semifinals, 26-12. 

In the second day and final day of the competition, Thailand's Ramnarong Sawekwiharee defeated Haroon Khan of Pakistan in the semifinals of in the Men's -58kg with the score of 32-to-26 and  earned him one of the tickets of the said event.

The last athlete who qualified for Tokyo Olympics was Kurt Barbosa of the Philippines. After winning against Mongolian opponent in the quarter finals, he victoriously won over host Jordan's Zaid Al-Halawani in the men's -58kg semifinals. The come-from-behind win ended with the score of 50-49. 

Aside from Vietnam, Thailand and the Philippines, other Southeast Asian countries like Cambodia and Timor Leste competed in the two-day qualifying event.

14th ASEAN Taekwondo Championships 2019

The ASEAN Taekwondo Championships is being held at the Music Hall, Mall of Asia, Pasay City in the Philippines.

The tournament is a test event for the upcoming Southeast Asia Games 2019.

Eight Southeast Asian nations are competing at the two-day event that started on May 4. These are Brunei, Cambodia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Timor Leste, Vietnam and host Philippines.

Philippines will field two teams - Philippines Team A and Philippines Team B.

Indonesia and Thailand did not field its athletes at this regional event.

Competition commence with poomsae event on the first day while day two features the sparring events.

SEA Games 2019 News 053: Malaysia Focuses on Taekwondo Heavy Weight Classes

Malaysia is gearing up their taekwondo jins for the forth coming Southeast Asian Games in November.

At the Kuala Lumpur SEA Games 2017, Malaysia won 3 gold medals, one in kyorugi event thru Rozaimi Rozali in the men's 68kg and two gold medals in poomsae.

But that was in their home turf, their last gold medal before 2017SEA Games was in 2009 SEA Games in Vientinne, Laos courtesy of Che Chew Chan in the women's 73kg class.

Based on SEA Games records, most of the gold medals won by Malaysia were in heavy weight class categories in kyorugi events.

And now, Malaysia are looking to compete in the heavier weight class events because of better chances of winning medals.

Their Korean coach Kim Hyeong-seob has selected 22 athletes for training and three of them would be selected to compete in the World Grand Slam China Series on April 26 which offers qualifying points for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

In Southeast Asia, taekwondo powerhouses to beat are Thailand, the Philippines and Vietnam who always on top of the medal tally.

🥋 World Taekwondo Grand Slam Championships 2018

The World Taekwondo Grand Slam Championships 2018  was held at the Wuxi Taihu International Expo Center in Wuxi, China from April 20 to 22.

Southeast Asian teams who participated at this tournament were Malaysia, Philippines, Vietnam and Thailand.

Thailand emerged as the most successful team from Southeast Asian collecting two gold medals and a lone bronze medal putting them second place overall. While Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam were medal-less in this competition.

Our Southeast Asian jins competed against the entries from other countries like Mexico, United States, Korea and Turkey competing in 8 weight categories.

China topped the medal standing with 5 gold medals while the other gold medal was won by an athlete from Turkey.

 

On day 1  of the competition, Olympian Panipak Wongpattanakit of Thailand won the gold medal of the women's -49kg category event beating Kaiqi Liu of host China.

The other gold medalist from Thailand came from Ramnarong Sawekwiharee in the men's -58kg category event. 

While the lone bronze medal was won by Phannapa Harnsujin in the women's -57kg.

🥋 World Taekwondo - YOG Qualification

The two-day qualifying competition for the Youth Olympic Games 2018 took place on April 6 to 7 with 438 athletes from 111 participating countries in Hammamet, Tunisia.

Southeast Asian nations who participated in this qualifying tournament were Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. 

Thailand and Vietnam reached the quarter finals of the women's -49kg category. This means that they qualified an athlete depending on the rank of their athlete and Youth Olympic host Argentina's choice of event weight.

At the end of the tournament, Thailand qualified three (3) athletes while Vietnam got 1 athlete going to Buenos Aires in Argentina for the 2018 Youth Olympic Games.

World Cadet Taekwondo Championships 2017

The World Cadet Taekwondo Championships 2017 was held in Sharme El Sheikh, Egypt last week of August drawing the best taekwondo jins around the world. 

Southeast Asian teams from Thailand and the Philippines were successful in their campaign as these two taekwondo powerhouse countries of Southeast Asia won medals in this tournament. 

Philippines' Mary Angeline Alcantara won the gold medal in the women's -44kg category while her compatriot Arianne Espida settled for silver medal in the women's -37kg category.

Thailand again proved that they have world class talents capturing 9 medals including 3 golds. 

Gold medal winners from Thailand are Chu Jongkolrattanawattana in the women's -41kg event, Ratatip Namsri in the women's -33kg event and Sasikarn Tongchan in the women's -51kg category.

Also making to the podium are Fasai Chaknok (women's -29kg), Thawin Yaengkulchow (men's -37kg) and Pawilai Kobkuerkul (women's +59kg). All three settled for silver medals while Thanakrit Yodrak (men's -45kg), Napat Sritimongkol (men's -49kg) and Pannatorn Talaiwong (men's -57kg) won bronze medals in this competition.

At the end of competition, Thailand tops the female division while Mexico tops the male counterpart.

Vietnam also participated in this tourney but to collect a medal.

🥋 9th Asian Junior Taekwondo Championships 2017

The 9th Asian Junior Taekwondo Championships was held in Atyrau, Kazakhstan from April 19 to April 21.

Five Southeast Asian countries took part in this youthful event. These were Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.

And as expected, Thailand, the Philippines and Vietnam athletes shined in this kyorugi tournament.

Thailand won 2 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze medals and ranked third (3rd) overall. The Philippines on the other hand captured 4 silver and 1 bronze medals and placed fifth (5th) overall while Vietnam won three (3) bronze medals.  

A total of 246 athletes from 24 countries of Asia participated in this Asian championships with a total of  twenty (20) events.
