Team Singapore at the 13th ASEAN School Games

 

More than 100 student athletes from 24 schools will be representing Singapore at the 13th ASEAN School Games (ASG) in Da Nang, Vietnam from 31 May to 9 June 2024. The Singapore School Sports Team (SSST) contingent will compete in four sports, namely Athletics, Badminton, Basketball and Swimming.

The Southeast Asian Regional Qualification Tournament concluded on Friday, May 10, with Singapore taking all the two quota places for Paris Olympics. Izaac Quek bagged the quota place for the Men's Singles while Jian Zeng got the Women's Singles Olympic quota. 

 

Quek defeated Phakpoom of Thailand in the Men's Singles finals, 4-2 (7-11, 12-10, 8-11, 11-3, 11-5, 11-5) to secure the lone Olympic ticket for Southeast Asia.

 

For the women's singles, Jian Zeng secured the Olympic quota for SEA defeating Nguyen Khanh of Vietnam in the finals, 4-1 (11-7, 11-6, 11-8, 9-11, 12-10).

 

In the the said qualifying tournament, Philippines has shown potential and promising talents such as Kheith Cruz and John Russel Misal who reached the semifinals in their respective events and gave a hard battles to their opponents. The two were in our radar as contenders for this event.

Good Fight From SEA Young Keglers

Six young Southeast Asian bowlers competed at the IBF Youth World Cup 2024 in Lima, Peru from January 19 to 27.

 

These were Malaysia's Nur Hazirah Binti Ramli and Megat Zaqrul Haiqal, Philippines' Danielle Lazo and Artegal Barrientos and Singapore's Ning Tay and Aiman Raedyn Lim Jen.

 

From the six young keglers, only Haiqal of Malaysia and Ning Tay of Singapore reached the semifinals of their respective divisions.

 

However, the two bowlers finished outside the medal podium of the competition. Haiqal settled 4th after losing to Lukas Jelinek of Czech Republic in the Boys' bronze medal match, 0-2 (223-224, 192-196) while Tay had the same fate losing to Sara Duque of Colombia in Grils' division, 2-0 (207-210, 212-225).

Meanwhile, Singapore's Aiman Raedyn Lim Jen & Nur Hazirah Binti Ramli of Malaysia failed to advance in the semifinals after losing to their respective opponents in the quarterfinals. While Philippine bets did not advance to the second stage of the competition and both ended in 10th place.

 

Southeast Asian bowlers are in the right direction as our SEA bowlers had a good fight in this World Cup event.

Three SEA Nations for Gangwon 2024

Southeast Asian (SEA) region will be represented by three (3) nations in the 2024 Winter Youth Olympic Games in Gangwon, South Korea. These tropical countries are the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand.

This is Philippines' 3rd appearance in the games (2012, 2020, 2024) while this is Singapore's & Thailand's second consecutive appearance in the Winter Youth Games (2020 & 2024).

 

Peter Groseclose, Avery Balbanida, and Laetaz Rabe will compete for the Philippines while Ryo Ong and Amelia Chua will banner Singapore's flag in Gangwon. Meanwhile, Thailand has the most number of participating athletes from the SEA region with more than 10 athletes. 

 

The 4th edition of the Winter Youth Olympic Games will be held from January 19 to February 1.

Singapore will be represented by 431 athletes in the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China this coming September. This is the largest contingent ever to be sent by Singapore in the Asiad. The contingent will compete in 32 sports.

 

Jowen Lim of wushu & Amita Berthier from fencing will be Singapore's flag bearers to the Asian Games. However, their first ever Olympic gold medalist Joseph Schooling will not be present for Asiad.

 

At the last Asian Games in Indonesia, Singapore finished at 18th place in the medal tally with four gold medals, two of which came from Joseph Schooling in swimming.

 

2023 Asian Athletics Championships

 

Southeast Asian athletes had a successful campaign at the recently concluded Asian Athletics Championships 2023 held in Bangkok, Thailand from July 12 to 16.

The competition was dominated by Japan that collected 16 gold medals followed by China with 8 golds and India with six gold medals.

Leading our Southeast Asian athletes was Veronica Shanti Pereira of Singapore who raked two gold medals in the century dash and in the 200m run. Aside from winning gold medals, the fastest women in Asia established new national record and new meet record.

Pereira posted 11.20s in the 100m run, a new Singapore record and 22.70s in the women's 200m to set a new Asian Championships record.

Meanwhile, Philippines also recorded two gold medals courtesy of Robyn Lauren Brown in the women's 400m hurdles with a time of 57.50s and from 2024 Paris Olympic qualifier Ernest John Obiena in the men's pole vault. Obiena who was favorite to win the gold medal set a new meet record of 5.91m.

Vietnam also snatched a gold medal in the women's 4x400m relay run. The team is composed of Thi Ngoc Nguyen, Thi Minh Hanh Hoang, Thi Huyen Nguyen and Thi Hang Nguyen who clocked 3:32.36.

 

Host Thailand did not fail their supporters by clinching the lobe gold medal in the men's 4x100m relay event. Natawat Iamudom, Soraoat Dapbang, Chayut Khongprasit and Puripol Boonson clocked 38.55s and established a new meet record. 

Asude from the mentioned gold medalists, some of our Southeast Asian athletes also won medals in this Asian championships. These are Tawan Kaeodam of Thailand (men's high jump - bronze); Muhammad Irfan Bin Shamshuddin of Malaysia (men's discus throw - bronze) and Sutthisak Singkhon of Thailand (men's decathlon - silver).

 

In the women's side, Nguyễn Thị Hường of Vietnam (triple jump - bronze), Chayanisa Chomchuendee of Thailand (pole vault - bronze), Subenrat Insaeng of Thailand (discus throw - bronze) and Thailand's Supawan Thipat, Supanich Poolkerd, On-Uma Chattha and Athicha Phetkun in the 4x100m run (bronze).

 

Philippines and Singapore shared in 6th place in the medal tally while host Thailand ended in 10th place, Vietnam in 13th and Malaysia in 17th place.

The 24th edition of the Asian Athletics Championships was held at Supachalasai National Stadium that featured 45 events participated by more than 40 Asian countries.

 

 

2023 WBSC Coed Slow Pitch World Cup Asia Qualifier

 

Three Southeast Asian teams along with China and Chinese Taipei are competing in the first-ever Coed Slow Pitch Softball Asia Cup qualifier in Pattaya, Thailand. These are Philippines, Singapore and host Thailand.

 

The event which will run from May 24 to May 27 will serve as a qualifier for the Asian region to the WBSC Slow Pitch World Cup, 

The top three teams in the final standings will earn a ticket to this coed team event, the WBSC’s newest global event for mixed teams.

#SEAGames2023 | 558 Athletes To Represent Singapore

A total of 558 athletes across 30 sports will represent Singapore in the 32nd Southeast Asian Games in Cambodia. They will also send 26 athletes across six sports in the ASEAN Para Games (APG). 

The six sports that they will compete in APG are swimming, athletics, badminton, powerlifting, boccia and table tennis.

 

Meanwhile, Singapore wrestling team is currently on a 3-week training after its participation at the Asian championships in Kazakhstan which was scheduled from April 9 to 14.

At the 2021 SEA Games in Vietnam, Singapore only managed to win a silver and a bronze medals courtesy of Gary Chow and Timothy Loh respectively. The team is hoping to improve their performance this coming SEA Games in May.

Wrestling competition will be held at Hall E of Chroy Changvar Convention Centre from May 14 to 16.

 

#SEAGames2023 | No Joseph Schooling for Singapore

 

2016 Olympic gold medalist in 100m butterfly Joseph Schooling will be absent for the 32nd Southeast Asian Games in Cambodia.

“After careful consideration with my team, I have decided to pull out of the SEA Games,” the 27-year-old Olympic gold medalist said in a South China Morning Post report.

According to him, he would instead focus on his National Service duties and “cheer” for his teammates from home. 

Schooling is one of the most decorated Asian swimmers ever. A 12-time NCAA champion and 17-time medalist at the University of Texas. He also won 29 gold and 34 in total medals at the Southeast Asian Games.

In 2022, he was suspended from participating in swimming competitions subsequent to his admission of engaging in the illicit consumption of cannabis in Vietnam. 

 

At the last SEA Games in Vietnam, Schooling won two gold medals - in the 100m butterfly and in the 4x100m medley relay. 

 

#SEAGames2023 News | Volleyball Teams Gearing Up for SEA Games

Four Southeast Asian countries are fielding their teams for training and friendly competitions abroad.

 

The Philippine men's team who recently unveiled the names of their training pool are in Taiwan for a training camp in preparation for the 32nd Southeast Asian Games. 

A couple of tune-up games are scheduled during their 10-day camp against four club teams in Taipei. This team is composed of new faces where only two athletes from the last SEA Games remain and also having a new head coach.

Meanwhile, Malaysia and Singapore are going to Maldives for the Four Nations Cup 2023. This volleyball tournament is scheduled from February 23 to 27 at the Social Center Indoor Hall in Male City Maldives.

Aside from host Maldives and our SEA teams, the other country participating is Afghanistan.

And speaking about Team Maldives, their women's team is training in Thailand in preparation for this volleyball competition. They also had a tune up match against a Thai team. 

Meanwhile, 32nd SEA Games host Cambodia men's team will be having friendly match against France U-19 team on February 19. 

#SEAGames2023 News | Indonesia & Singapore in Swimming Battle

 

The swimming teams of Indonesia and Singapore had the opportunity to test their swimmers against each other in a friendly competition last weekend.

It was a successful South East Asian Swimming Dual Meet Series short course (25m) between Team Indonesia and Team Singapore that took place at Aquatic Stadium, Gelora Bung Karno in Jakarta, Indonesia. The event was held from the 28th to 29th of January 2023.

 

Indonesia broke some national records in this dual meet series that give a positive outcome for the team. For instance, Gusti Ayu Made Nadya Saraswati and Adelia are those successful swimmers who broke national records.

Around 40 swimmers competed from both countries over two days. The event is also in preparation to the 32nd Southeast Asian Games to be held in Phnom Penh, Cambodia next May.

 

 

 

 

Singapore & Malaysia Won in World Table Tennis Championships

 

The 2023 ITTF World Veterans Championships took place at the Sultanate of Oman from January 15 to 21 with Singapore and Malaysia getting medals at the event.

Singapore's Mui Heng Liang won the gold medal in the Women’s Singles (50-54 Years) beating Shilpa Joshi of India in the finals, 11-7, 11-6, 11-5.

Meanwhile Tay Kee of Malaysia celebrated with two medals in the men's events. He won silver medal in the men's singles (65-69 years) event. He was defeated by Paal Guttormsen of Norway in the finals, 5-11, 3-11, 5-11. However, he won gold medal in the men's doubles (65 years) event with partner Risto Pitkänen of Finland.

Only Malaysia and Singapore from Southeast Asia participated at this year's edition of World Veterans Championships in Muscat.

Malaysia & Singapore Win Big at Asian Bowling Championships

Bowlers from Malaysia and Singapore were successful  in their campaigns at the recently concluded 26th Asian Tenpin Bowling Championships held in Hong Kong. The event which offered twelve (12) events was scheduled from January 9 to 18.

Malaysia who raked a total of 12 medals dominated the men's events including 4 gold medals. Meanwhile, Singapore topped the medal tally board winning 11 medals that includes 4 gold medals from women's event and a lone gold medal from the men's event.

Aside from Malaysia and Singapore, other participating Southeast Asian teams were Philippines and Thailand.

SEA Bowlers Started with a Bang

The Singapore and Malaysian tenpin bowlers won medals on the first day of the 26th Asian Tenpin Bowling Championships being held in Hong Kong. The singles events for both men and women's divisions were played on Tuesday, January 10. 

 

Southeast Asian teams from Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand are taking part in this Asian tilt which will run until January 18.

♞ Chess | 2022 FIDE World Blitz Women’s Chess Championships

 

Three of our Southeast Asian chess players competed at the recently concluded 2022 FIDE World Blitz Women’s Chess Championships in Almaty, Kazakhstan. The FIDE Women's World Blitz Championship is a 17-round Swiss tournament taking place from 29–30 December 2022 in Almaty, Kazakhstan. The prize fund is $150,000, with a $40,000 top prize.

Philippines' Woman Grandmaster Janelle Mae Frayna finished 24th out of 99 competitors with 10 points while Singapore's WGM Gong Qianyun finished in 29th place with 9.5 points. Meanwhile, WIM Foudzi Siti Zulaikha of Malaysia ended 89th place with 6 points.

 

Assaubayeva Bibisara of Kazakhstan won the event with 13 points.

Malaysia & Singapore brought pride for Southeast Asian region as the two countries took home medals in team & individual events.

 

Team Malaysia takes the bronze medal in the women's team event after an edge to edge battle against the United States. In the men's team, the Philippines fell short to host Australia in a battle for 3rd place position and settled only for 4th place.

For individual event, New Hui Fen of Singapore settled for silver medal in the women's event. She failed to beat Bryanna Cote of United States in the finals. Meanwhile,  Timmy Tan of Malaysia and Lara Posadas of the Philippines both ended 4th place in the men's and women's events respectively.  

 

Tan misses out on the podium with a lost to Kris Prather of United States in a tight bronze medal match while Posadas overpowered by Germany's Birgit Noreiks.

3 SEA Teams Advances in Asia Cup Pre-Qualifier 2nd Round

 

Only Twelve teams from the first round of the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup Pre-qualifier will move on to the second round next year. The teams are divided into two groups - Group E & Group F. 

Luckily, three Southeast Asian teams qualified after the four-day competition in the first round held in separate venues - in India and in Mongolia.

 

Thailand who topped Group D in the first round swept all their games to victory followed by Mongolia who played host for the group and Malaysia who finished third. These top 3 teams in group D qualify for the second round together with the top 3 teams in Group C.

 

From Group C, going to the seconf round are top performer Guam, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Singapore will join Thailand and Malaysia Asia in Group F for the second round to be held on February 2023. 

For Group E, it is composed of Oman, Qatar, UAE, Palestine, Iraq and Kuwait.

Four (4) Southeast Asian teams are ready to compete in the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup Pre-Qualifier.

 

Team Singapore is in Group C while Thailand, Malaysia & Vietnam are in Group D.

 

The tournament will be held from November 10 to 14 in various host locations: Group A in Qatar, Group in Palestine, Group C in Guam & Group D in Mongolia.

Philippines Qualifies to WBSC Men's Softball World Cup

Team Philippines settled for silver medal behind host Japan who captured the Men's Softball Asia Cup title today. Japan remains unscratched in the competition after beating Philippines in the finals, 9-2.

Both teams will represent Asia in the XVII WBSC Men's Softball World Cup, which is scheduled from 26 November to 4 December in New Zealand.

 

Meanwhile, Singapore captured the bronze medal after beating India, 12-5, while Thailand ended 6th place after vowing to Hong Kong, 1-5.

Singapore Qualifies to U23 Softball World Cup

 

The U23 Singapore softball team qualifies to U23 Softball World Cup 2022 after finishing second behind host Japan in the U23 Men's Softball Asia Cup 2022. 

The three-nation double round robin qualifying event was held at the Shimanto Stadium, Anami Sports Park in Shimanto City, Kochi Prefecture from September 1 to 2.

Japan swept all their matches to show their dominance in softball while Singapore got 2-win 2-loss card and India losing all their matches in the two-day event.
