#SEAGames2023 | 558 Athletes To Represent Singapore

A total of 558 athletes across 30 sports will represent Singapore in the 32nd Southeast Asian Games in Cambodia. They will also send 26 athletes across six sports in the ASEAN Para Games (APG). 

The six sports that they will compete in APG are swimming, athletics, badminton, powerlifting, boccia and table tennis.

 

Meanwhile, Singapore wrestling team is currently on a 3-week training after its participation at the Asian championships in Kazakhstan which was scheduled from April 9 to 14.

At the 2021 SEA Games in Vietnam, Singapore only managed to win a silver and a bronze medals courtesy of Gary Chow and Timothy Loh respectively. The team is hoping to improve their performance this coming SEA Games in May.

Wrestling competition will be held at Hall E of Chroy Changvar Convention Centre from May 14 to 16.

 

Southeast Asian Wrestling Championships 2022

 

Vietnam dominated the recently concluded Southeast Asian Wrestling Championships 2022. The event was held at the Phumin Phnom Penh University in Cambodia from December from December 16 to 18. 

 

Wrestling is one of the 49 sports to be featured at the 32nd Southeast Asian Games in Cambodia.

 

Below is the final medal tally of the regional wrestling tournament. 

 

 

For team Philippines, below are the eleven athletes who won medals at the SEA Wrestling Championships in Cambodia.

The Asian Wrestling Championships 2018 was held in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan from February 27 to March 4.

Thailand participated in the women's and greco-roman events while Vietnam only competed in the women's events.

Vietnam became Southeast Asian strong competitors in wrestling especially in the women's category. They often compete in international events like this in the recent years.

🥋 Southeast Asian Wrestling Championships 2017

The wrestlers from Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and host Vietnam competed at the Bac Ninh Provincial Multi-purpose Stadium in Vietnam for 24 sets of medals in the men’s freestyle and classical categories while the women's side competed in freestyle events.

From the seven Southeast Asian countries, more than 125 wrestlers participated in the 3-day tournament from November 23 to 25.   

After three days of competition, Vietnamese wrestlers won all the 24 sets of gold medals.

In the women’s freestyle event, gold medals went to Nguyen Thi Xuan, Vu Thi Hang, Kieu Thi Ly, Dao Thi Huong, Nguyen Thi My Hanh, Nguyen Thi Vinh, Ly Thi Nguyet and Tran Thi Huong.

In the men’s classical category, gold medals went to Doi Dang Tien, Pham Sy Thu, Nguyen Vu Hoang, Do Minh Tuan, Nghiem Dinh Hieu, Duong Thanh Ho, Nguyen Ba Son and Vu Van Hao.

Meanwhile, Pham Van Co, Nguyen Huu Dinh, Nguyen Xuan Dinh, Nguyen Dinh Long, Can Tat Du, Hoang Van Nam, Ngo Van Lam and Ha Van Hieu seized gold medals in the men’s free style category.

Vietnam overpowered other Southeast Asian wrestlers to claim the overall championships leaving the silver and bronze medals to them.

🤼‍ Asian Cadet Wrestling Championships 2017

Wrestling is one of the sports that our Southeast Asian athletes can hardly penetrate. In Asian level, most competitive wrestlers always came from the west and central Asia. Their dominant physique and the focus in wrestling are evidence of their podium finishes.

East Asian countries like Japan and Mongolia are also teams to beat because of their good concentration and training in sport of wrestling.

This is why Southeast Asia has low number of competitors during international tournaments. Thailand and Vietnam are the two countries that always sends athletes and do try to podium every tournament. 

This is big deal for Southeast Asia as wrestling is an Olympic sport and a regular sport in Asian Games. This means that Southeast Asian federations has to do something in order to catch up with other Asian countries or at least to have the same level with them.

Below are the best results from Thai and Vietnamese wrestlers.  Thi My Trang Nguyen of Vietnam is the only medalists from Southeast Asia. She won bronze in the women's 52kg event.

The Asian Wrestling Championships 2017 took place at the KD Jadhav Indoor Stadium, Indira Gandhi Arena, New Delhi in India from May 10 to May 14.

Three (3) Southeast Asian countries participated in this event. These were Cambodia with one (1) athlete, Thailand with ten (10) athletes and Vietnam with five (5) women wrestlers.
