Alex Eala Won First-Ever Doubles Title

Alex Eala of the Philippines and doubles partner Darja Semenistaja from Latvia won over top-seed pair of Fanny Stollár of Hungary and Naiktha Bains Great Britain in the finals, 7-6, 6-3, of the ITF WTT W50 Pune held in India. This is Alex Eala's first ever doubles title and first title of the year.

Before going into the finals, the duo defeated Japanese opponents in the semifinals, 7-6, 6-3, and bested Jessie Aney of United States and Lena Papadakis of Germany in the quarterfinals, 6-4, 2-6, 10-4.

In the singles event, the two tennis sensations faced each other in the quarterfinal round where Semenistaja won over Eala, 7-6, 6-0.

2023 Billie Jean King Cup Asia-Oceania Group II

 

Indonesia failed to win over Team Pacific Oceania in the promotional play-off at the 2023 Billie Jean King Cup Asia-Oceania Group II tournament held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The event was held at the National Tennis Center from July 24 to 29 with participating SEA teams like Singapore, Indonesia and host Malaysia.

#SEAGames2023 | PH Tennis Team for Cambodia

Eight-man squad will represent Philippines in tennis at the 32nd Southeast Asian Games in Cambodia this coming May.

 

Francis Casey Alcantara who recently reached the men's doubles semifinals in Jakarta (together with Pruchya Isara of Thailand) is one of members of the Philippine men's team for SEA Games. He will be joining Ruben Gonzales who is recently competing in Mexico along with Miko Eala and Eric Olivarez. 

For the women's side, Alex Eala will not see action in Cambodia but will be represented by her 2021 SEA Games teammates that won bronze medal in women's team event. These are Shaira Hope Rivera, Marian Capadocia and Jenaila Rose Prulla with Khim Iglupas.

 

Philippines is competing in all seven events to be contested in Cambodia which includes the men’s and women’s singles, doubles (men & women), team events (men & women) and the mixed doubles.

 

In the 2021 SEA Games in Vietnam, the Philippines won one gold medal in men's doubles courtesy of Treat Huey and Ruben Gonzales. 

 

The tennis competition will start on May 6 until May 14 at the Tennis Complex, Morodok in Phnom Penh.

 

 

 

Alex Eala Writes Tennis History for PHI

 

Philippines' tennis sensation Alexandra Eala wins the 2022 US Open Tennis Championships Junior Girls Title in New York.

 

The 17-year old Eala defeated Lucie Havlíčková of Czech Republic in the girls finals, 6-2, 6-4, to become the first Filipino to win a Grand Slam juniors singles title on Saturday, August 10.

 

With her feat, a history is made for Philippine tennis book.  

 

Overwhelmed by her victory, her fans and supporters expressed their congratulatory messages on social media and became one of the trending topics on Twitter.

 

The US Junior champ was a member of team Philippines who competed in the 2021 SEA Games in Vietnam where she managed to collect 3 bronze medals in her first SEA Games appearance.

Aside from that, she had previously won doubles gold in the 2020 Australian Open and 2021 French Open.

#SEAGames2021 News 030 | Vietnam Targets Three Gold Medals in Tennis

 

 

After making a tennis history in SEA Games for winning its first ever gold medal in men's singles, Vietnam is targeting to win three gold medals in the 31st Southeast Asian Games at home soil. 

 

To achieve this goal, the Vietnam Tennis Federation sets out a series of specific plans, including bringing an ATP Tour 250 tournament to Vietnam which serves a big playground for Vietnamese promising players, such as Ly Hoang Nam and Trinh Linh Giang to hone their skills.

 

Aside from that, the federation invested heavily towards Vietnam tennis players competing in local and international tournaments to succeed in Hanoi's SEA Games.

At the Davis Cup Play-off which is recently held at the Centro Nacional De Tenis Parque Del Este in Santo Domingo, team Vietnam suffered defeat from the host Dominican Republic, 0-3.

Aside from Nam and Giang, members of the Davis Cup who competed last March 4 to 5 were Phuong Van Nguyen, Quoc-khanh Le and Minh Tuan Pham. 

As of writing, Nam Hoang Ly is playing in the M15 Creteil tennis tour in France and has reached the semifinals.

 

At the 2019 SEA Games, Vietnam won the most number of medals in tennis including one gold medal in men's singles courtesy of Nam Hoang Ly. 

#SEAGames2021 News 029 | Indonesia Tennis Team Ready to Defend Title

 

 

 

To maintain the success from the 2019 Southeast Asian Games, Indonesia (PP Pelti) conducted tournaments as preparation for the Vietnam SEA Games this coming May.

 

One of the tournaments was the Mandiri Tennis Open 2022 held at the tennis court of The Sultan Hotel and Residence in Jakarta from February 6 to 13. 

 

2019 SEA Games gold medalists topped their respective events at the tournament. In the women's singles event, it was Aldila Sutjiadi who won the title while in the women's doubles, Beatrice Gumulya and Jessy Rompies brought home the crown.

In the men's doubles, M Rifqi Fitriadi and M Gunawan Trismuwantara bagged the event. It was a double celebration for M Rifqi Fitriadi as he also won the singles event.

 

Last March 4 and 5, the men's team won against Team Venezuela in the Davis Cup Group II held at the Stadion Tenis Outdoor Gelora Bung Karno in Jakarta, Indonesia.

 

The team is composed of Fitriadi M Rifqi, Christopher Rungkat, Achad Imam Maruf, Muhammad Althaf Dhaifullah and Nathan Anthony Barki.

 

At the 2019 SEA Games in Manila, Indonesia won 3 gold medals and two bronze medals. 

#SEAGames2021 News 028 | Thailand Targets 2 Gold Medals in Tennis

 

 

 

After a disappointing result from the 2019 Southeast Asian Games in the Philippines, Thailand tennis team is ready to bounce back this coming May.

 

Thailand got "zero" gold medal in the last SEA Games edition and just placed 4th overall in the tennis medal tally with two silver and three bronze medals.

 

In the coming 31st SEA Games in Vietnam, team Thailand is targeting two gold medals from the seven (7) events at stake in tennis.

 

Thai players are preparing for the biennial games and also for the Asian Games in China this September. But the main focus of the team for the meantime is the Vietnam SEA Games.

Last year, the Thailand national team received sports science program from Kasetsart University. The program includes nutrition, psychology, physical training programs and fitness tests for tennis players.

 

As preparation, the second circuit of the Thailand Championships was held at the National Tennis Development Centre in Nonthaburi province where ace players participated to make the SEA Games cut.

Recently, Thailand men's team played against Team Latvia in the Davis Cup Group II which was held at the Lawn Tennis Association of Thailand in Bangkok, Thailand. 

 

The team was composed of Yuttana Charoenphon, Wishaya Trongcharoenchaikul, Kasidit Samrej, Kasidit Samrej and team captain Pruchya Isaro. In the two-day play-off match which was held from March 4, the Thai team lost to Latvia, 2-3 games.

 

 

#SEAGames2021 News 027 | PH Tennis Players Named for SEA Games

 

 

With just two months before the much awaited 31st Southeast Asian (SEA) Games, the athletes that will banner the Philippine flag has been named.

 

Lead by 2019 SEA Games gold medalists Jeson Patrombon and Francis Alcantara, the men's squad will be composed of USA-based players Treat Huey, Ruben Gonzales and Eric Olivarez.

 

For the women's team, tennis ace Alex Eala will debut in the biennial meet along with newcomer Jenaila Rose Prulla. While US NCAA netter Khim Iglupas and Marian Capadocia complete the team.

 

Seven golds are at stake in the 31st SEA Games tennis competition featuring men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, women's doubles, mixed doubles, men's team and women's team events. The team events were not played in the 2019 SEA Games in the Philippines.

 

The strong and competitive tennis team hopes to better their medal haul performance at the last SEA Games in 2019. Team Philippines won one gold, one silver and two bronze medals to finish 3rd overall in the tennis medal tally.

 

 

 

#SEAGames2021 News 007 | 4 New Indonesian Tennis Players Added to The National Squad

 

Four new players were identified to join the national training pool for the 31st Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Hanoi this coming May. 

After holding the Vietnam SEA Games selection for tennis, two women and two men were selected to join the national training this February.

 

For the men's division, 14 tennis athletes were invited to join in the preparatory selection for SEA Games which was held at the GBK Senayan Tennis Center Court, Jl. Gate I Senayan, Jakarta. These are Achad Imam Ma'ruf (West Papua), Ari Fahresi of East Java, Claudio Renardi Lamanauw (DKI Jakarta), Iqbal Bilal Saputra (East Kalimantan), Justin Kuo (West Java), Kareem Abdul Hakim (West Java) and Lucky Chandra Kurniawan (South Kalimantan), 

 

The other players who also invited in the January 3-8 selection were Moh. Gunawan Trismuwantara (East Java), M Althaf Dhaifullah Albaihaqi (West Papua), Nauvaldo Jati Agatra (DKI Jakarta), Nathan Anthony Barki (West Java), Rafli Feby Putra Tri Prasetyo (West Java), Rifqy Sukma Ramadhan (West Java), and Tegar Abdi Satria Wibowo (South Kalimantan).

 

But among the 14 athletes, Achad Imam Maruf and Tegar Abdi Satrio Wibowo were named to join the national squad.

In the women's side, Fitriani Sabatini from DKI Jakarta and Novela Rezha Milenia from Papua were selected and will debut for the red and white flag in Vietnam SEA Games.

 

The four new names will join 2019 SEA Games gold medalists Aldila Sutjiadi, Jessy Rompies, and Beatrice Gumulya for the women's division; and Christopher Rungkat, M. Rifqi Fitriadi and Justin Barki for the men's category.

 

Some of these national players are taking part in the national championships dubbed as Mandiri Tennis Open 2022 scheduled from February 6 to 13.

 

Indonesia won three gold medals out of the five events in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games held in the Philippines.

Indonesia is targeting two gold medals from tennis at the Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) to be held later this year in the Philippines.

Indonesia can get two gold medals in women's doubles and mixed doubles events and will have an intensive training that would commence in August.

Team Indonesia has shortlisted five female and five male tennis players to join the program.

The red and white flag may rely on Christopher Rungkat and Aldila Sutjiadi who won gold medal after disposing Thailand's Sonchat Ratiwatana and Luksika Kumkhum in mixed doubles at the 2018 Asian Games.

Indonesia's main opponents in the SEA Games tennis are likely to be from Thailand and host country the Philippines.

Vietnam may give a good fight in tennis at the Southeast Asian Games in the Philippines after tennis player Thái Sơn Kwiatkowski, ATP world rank 275, becomes a naturalised Vietnamese citizen.

Kwiatkowski has a Vietnamese mother and a Polish-American father. The 1.88m American athlete is 23 years old and expected to take part at the 30th edition of the biennial meet to be held from November 30 to December 11.

🎾 10th ITF Malacca International Junior Championship 2018

The 10th ITF Malacca International Junior Championship 2018 was held  at the MITC Tennis Complex Ayer Keroh, Melaka in Malaysia from May 8 to 13.

Players from SEA nations like Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam competed against other players from Chinese Taipei, India, China, Australia, Japan, Korea and Hong Kong. 

Thailand claimed the boys' doubles event title as the tandem of Natthayut Nithithananont and Thantub Suksumrarn of Thailand defeated Chieh Cheng Yu and Hua-Chen Yu of Chinese Taipei, 6-4 & 6-4.

They also defeated the team from Hong Kong in the semi finals and Indonesia's  Odeda Muhammad Arazza and Rafli Feby Putra Tri Prasetyo in the quarter finals.

In the boy's singles event, Thantub Suksumrarn of Thailand faced Yamato Sueoka of Japan in the finals and defeated the Japanese player in two matches, 6-1 and 6-3.

But before reaching the finals, he beat Chinese Taipei's Han-Chih Lin in the semifinals and Malaysia's   Jian Keong, Takeshi Koey in the quarter finals, 6-3 and 6-2.

In girl's singles event, Thailand dominates again courtesy of  Lunda Kumhom who defeated Jiaqi Huang of China, 6-4 and 6-1 in the semi finals, to arrange a final clash against India's Shivani Amineni.

At the final clash, Kumhom prevailed by disposing Amineni, 6-3 and 6-1 to win the girl's singles title.

Also in semi finals of girl's singles event was Indonesia's Janice Tjen who vowed out to Amineni of India.

For doubles of girls event, Indonesia's Priska Madelyn Nugroho shared its victory with India's Shivani Amineni as the two teamed-up to defeated Yujiao Che and Jiaqi Huang of China, 6-2 and 6-3 in the finals. 

The duo also defeated Janice Tjen of Indonesia who partnered with Chia Yi Tsao from Taipei in the semi finals.

All-in-all, Southeast Asian youth tennis players had a great finish at the end of the competition especially for the Thai and Indonesian competitors.

🎾 2nd KL ITF International Junior Championship 2018

The 2nd KL ITF International Junior Championship 2018 was held at the National Tennis Centre Jalan Tuanku Abdul Halim in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from May 1 to 6.

Thailand dominated the tournament capturing three titles.

Thailand's Thantub Suksumrarn defeated Malaysia's Jian Keong Takeshi Koey in the finals of the boy's singles event, 6-4 and 6-4.

Before going to the final event, Suksumrarn and Koey defeated two other Thai players in the semi finals.

Suksumrarn defeated fellow Michael Mathayomchand (6-1, 6-2) while Koey overpowered Natthayut Nithithanont, 6-4 and 6-3.

In boys' doubles event, it was the same faces from Thailand who won the event. Natthayut Nithithanont and Thantub Suksumrarn won over the tandem of Indonesia's Odeda Muhammad Arazza and Malaysia's Hamirul Shahril Mohd Adam Da in the finals, 6-1 and 6-3.

Both teams successfully beat their Taiwanese rivals in the semi finals before enrouting to the finals.

For girl's singles event, another Thai player in the name of Lunda Kumhom was emerged champion beating Indonesian Fadona Titalyana Kusumawati in the finals, 6-1, 7-6(4). 

Lunda Kumhom outclassed Singapore's Charmaine Shi Yi Seah, 6-1 7-6(4) in the semifinals while Fadona Titalyana Kusumawati beat China's Zongyu Li, 7-5, 6-2.

The only event which our Southeast Asian tennis players did not capture was the girls doubles.

This event was won by China'sirls' doubles Zongyu Li and Jingyi Wang.

They defeated the tandem of Samantha Nanere of Indonesia and Singapore's Charmaine Shi Yi Seah in the finals.

Other team that reached the quarter finals was the duo of Lunda Kumhom (THA) and Suhana Sofia Mohd Adam Das but eliminated by Nanere and Seah.

The Philippines also participated at this tournament but none of its players reached the quarter finals.

The Davis Cup - Asia/Oceania (Group III) tournament was held at the My Dinh Sports Complex in Hanoi, Vietnam from April 2 to 7.

Nine countries divided into 2 pools competed in this event with our three Southeast Asian teams grouped in Pool A - Cambodia, Malaysia and Vietnam along with Pacific-Oceania team.

Pool B was composed of Kuwait, Jordan, Qatar, Syria and Saudi Arabia.

The winner of Pool A will play-off against the runner-up of Pool B and the winner of Pool B will play-off against the runner-up of Pool A to determine which two nations will be promoted to Asia/Oceania Zone Group II in 2019.

In the relegation play-offs, the nations will compete in the following order: A3 v B5 and A4 v B4. The two losing nations will be relegated to Asia/Oceania IV in 2019.

🎾 Davis Cup - Asia/Oceania (Group II) Semi Finals

The semi finals of the Davis Cup - Asia/Oceania (Group II) between Philippines and Thailand was held at the Philippine Columbian Association in Manila, Philippines from April 7 to 8. 

Thailand is the favorite to win but chances were 50/50 because of home advantage of the Filipino tennis players. But with the series of clashes, Thailand prevailed halting the Filipino players to continue for the quest to be in Group I.

Group II

Group 2 is consisted of 8 teams from Hong Kong, Chinese Taipei, Iran, Lebanon, Sri Lanka and our Southeast Asian teams from Indonesia, the Philippines and Thailand.

Round 1 which was scheduled from the 3rd to 4th of February was divided into 4 team-matches. Iran against Hong Kong, Chinese Taipei against Lebanon, Indonesia against Philippines and Thailand versus Sri Lanka.

The winners from the first round will advance into the next round which will be played on the 7th-8th of April.

According to Davis Cup website, Thailand defeated Sri Lanka while the Philippines defeated Indonesia. This means that Thailand will face the Philippines in the second round while Indonesia will battle Sri Lanka in the loser bracket. 

The other results of round 1 matches are: Hong Kong defeated Iran while Lebanon beat Chinese Taipei.
