#SEAGames2023 | Triathlon, Duathlon & Aquathlon Attracted 7 Countries

 

Triathlon, Duathlon & Aquathlon which are under endurance race for the 32nd Southeast Asian Games in Cambodia will have 7 participating countries.

According to the latest registered participation list, these countries are Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines and host Cambodia.

 

There will be 7 gold medals to be contested in the biennial meet in May. These are the (2) men and women's triathlon; (2) men and women duathlon; (2) men and women's aquathlon; and one mixed relay for aquathlon (500m swim + 2.5km run).

 

Triathlon will be a 750m swimming plus 20km cycling and 5km running course while duathlon will have 5km run plus 20km bike ride and 2.5km run program. For aquathlon events, it will be a 500m swim and 2.5km run.

 

The competition program will start from May 6 to 8, 2023 in Kep province.

 

At the 2021 SEA Games in Vietnam, the Philippines dominated the triathlon and duathlon events collecting three gold medals.

More than 200 triathletes participated in the recently held National Age Group Triathlon (NAGT) Series-National Triathlon Trials at the Adventure Cove, Subic Bay, Zambales in the Philippines.

 

The event was said to be an official qualifying race for the Philippine National Team for triathlon in the 31st SEA Games and the Triathlon Association of the Philippines (TRAP) talent identification race.

 

At the event, three-time SEA Games gold medalist John Chicano ruled the men’s elite category while the biggest surprise in the NAGT was Raven Faith Alcoseba who topped the standard women’s elite despite being a newbie in triathlon.

 

The 18-year-old Alcoseba who hails from Talisay City and a varsity swimmer could be one of the members to be selected for triathlon/duathlon team that will don at the 31st Southeast Asian Games in Hanoi, Vietnam.

 

According to some reports, TRAP is planning to send Alcoseba  along with other members of the national team to Portugal to train for the upcoming SEA Games.

 

The Philippines who hosted the 2019 SEA Games captured 4 out of 6 gold medals in triathlon and duathlon events.

But this coming month of May, only 4 events are at stake in Vietnam's SEA Games - the Men's & Women's Individual events for both triathlon and duathlon.

 

SEA Games 2019 News 026: Philippines To Rake Medals in Triathlon Events

The Philippines who struck two gold medals at 2017 Kuala Lumpur SEA Games is confident of dominating the triathlon events this coming Southeast Asian Games which they will host.

Six gold medals are at stake at the 30th SEA Games which will be held in Subic and set on December 1 to 5.

Triathlon and duathlon will have three events each - the men's and women's individual events and the mixed team events.

Of the six gold medals to be competed, four are being targeted by host Philippines according to the president of Triathlon Association of the Philippines, the governing body of the Philippines for triathlon.

With high hopes, team Philippines is expected to enter the names of the recent SEA Games medalists in Malaysia. These are Nikko Huelgas, John Chicano, Kim Mangrobang and Claire Adorna.

If their names are included for the coming biennial meet, their names will also be expected to banner the Philippine flag.

But eyes are on Chicano who is expected to clinch the gold medal in men's individual category. And expected to make a rally against him are the Malaysian and Singaporean triathletes and two-time SEA Games champion Nikko Huelgas.

For duathlon events, names that popped-out are Kim Kilgroe in the women’s, Edward Macalalad, Mark Hosanna, JC Abad, Julius Crisostomo for the men’s division. 

Duathlon made a comeback after the 2007 SEA Games in Thailand and its second time this year.

While triathlon were featured at the 2005, 2007, 2015 and 2017 SEA Games. 

Meanwhile, the deadline for the number of events to be contested at the 2019 SEA Games will be finalized on March 15 according to source.

 

2018 Putrajaya ASTC Powerman Middle Distance Duathlon Asian Championships

The 2018 Putrajaya ASTC Powerman Middle Distance Duathlon Asian Championships was held in Dataran Putrajaya, Malaysia last March 4 and attracted duathletes from more than 10 countries.

The Philippines known for having strong competitors (in Southeast Asia) sent 7 men and 2 women duathletes in the elite or powerman division while host Malaysia competed with only 1 competitor in the men's division.

Indonesia and Singapore also participated but not in elite category.

In the men's elite category, John Chicano of the Philippines placed 3rd (bronze) after clocking 02:47:26 behind Thomas Bruins of the Netherlands (02:38:17) and Matt Smith of Australia (02:47:26) who placed first and second respectively. 

While in the women's elite, Philippines' Monica Torres clocked 03:06:42 to position herself 3rd overall. 

Annamária Eberhardt-Halász of Hungary won the event while Netherlands' Miriam Van Reijen took the second place.
