Online sporting events became the only way for some athletes to compete in their respective sports. And some of these online or virtual competitions gave our Southeast Asian athletes to enhance their skills and excel.
For the past months, e-kata discipline of karate just gave James De Los Santos of the Philippines to be a top performer in virtual competitions. In total, James gathered 26 gold medals in different virtual competitions and the recent was the final leg of Venice Cup. He is now hailed as the number 1 e-kata athlete.
In the Malaysian International Online Diving Competition 2020, Malaysian top divers dominated the 2-day competition which was participated by divers from Singapore, Australia, New Zealand and Japan.
As the pandemic continues around the world, athletes also continue their competitiveness thru online competitions like the Adidas Karate World Open Series E-Tournament 2020.
In the event, Malaysia took two bronze medals while the Philippines captured one controversial silver medal on this online tournament.
Sam Hiang Fong won the bronze medal in the women's e-kata individual u21 event while compatriot Muhammad Aiqal Asmadie won his bronze medal in the men's e-kata individual u16 event.
Meanwhile, Philippines' Orencio James "OJ" De los Santos was awarded silver medal in the men's individual e-kata senior event behind Portugal's Eduardo Garcia after a scoring glitch.
According to sportsdata.org, Germany topped the medal ranking with 7 gold medals which was participated by 52 nations.
Brunei, another SEA nation, also took part of the online tournament.

The Malaysia Karate Federation has called up 14 exponents to join the national set-up for the upcoming Southeast Asian Games to be held in Philippines.
Among the karatekas who were invited is 2006 Doha Asian Games silver medalist Kunasilan and Nisha Alagasan.
Kunalisan who left the national pool six years ago has rejoined the national karate team with the aim of winning gold medal in the men's -60kg kumite event.
As for Alagasan, she is concentrating in the women's 55kg kumite.
Both athletes were among the winners of the recently concluded National Karate Championships in Serdang.
Malaysia is one of the countries to watch out for at the biennial meet that will open on November 30.
At the 2017 SEA Games, Malaysia topped the karate medal tally with 7 gold medals.
Karate is a medal contributor for Indonesia in Asian Games and Southeast Asian Games.
Indonesia won one gold medal at the recent Asian Games 2018 and three gold medals at the 2017 SEA Games.
To sustain its gold medal rake, the Indonesian Karate Association (Pengurus Besar Federasi Olahraga Karate -do Indonesia or PB Forki) will give more opportunity to senior athletes to compete in the forthcoming SEA Games 2019.
The association puts priority on SEA Games and other big tournaments like the Asian Games and the Olympics.
Prior to this, it was reported that Indonesia will send most of their junior athletes at the 30th Southeast Asian Games to be held in the Philippines.
But for Indonesia's karate, their junior team will be joining special tournaments to enhance their capabilities and skills. But they are still considered for participating in SEA Games 2019.
Karate is one of the 56 sports calendared at the 30th Southeast Asian Games.
The 15th Asian Karate Senior Championships 2018 was held in Amman, Jordan from July 11 to 15.
Our Southeast Asian athletes were among the 293 karatekas from 29 Asian countries that competed in this event. Indonesia with 14 athletes, Malaysia with 10, Philippines under APK2 with 4 athletes, Thailand 12 and Vietnam with 13 athletes.
Japan topped the medal tally board with 8 golds followed by Iran who clinched 4 gold medals.

The 19th MILO International Karate Championship 2018 was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from June 29 to July 1.Host Malaysia took the overall championship collecting 45 gold medals followed by Indonesia winning 21 gold medals.Thailand placed third overall with 5 gold medals while the Philippines with very small number of athletes won 4 medals including the lone gold medal.The tournament attracted hundreds of karatekas from 9 countries including Malaysian karatekas from different club teams.

The 17th AKF Cadet, Junior & U-21 Championships 2018 was held from May 10 to 13 in Okinawa, Japan.Southeast Asian karatekas from Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam collected medals at this competition.The 4-day tournament also served as a qualifying event for the Youth Olympic Games 2018 for the sport of karate.
Team Malaysia managed to collect 2 gold, 1 silver and 5 bronze medals to finish 5th overall.Indonesia placed 6th overall with 2 gold and 7 bronze medals while Vietnam ended its campaign with 1 gold, 4 silver and 5 bronze medals to rank 8th overall.Thailand came in 9th place with 1 gold, 1 silver and 5 bronze medals while Japan topped the medal board with 14 gold, 5 silver and 5 bronze medals.

The 15th SBY Cup International Indonesia Karate Open 2018 was held at the at Youth GOR Kecamatan Koja, North Jakarta which ended last April 27.Participating teams of this event were teams from Sri Lanka, India, and Southeast Asian teams from the Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia teams and clubs.According to reports, the Philippines took home the overall championship with 12 gold medals, 2 silver and 1 bronze medals.Indonesian teams like the Dogiyai district contingent won 1 gold, 2 silver and 3 bronze medals while Universitas Teknokrat Indonesia managed to collect 3 gold, 1 silver and 4 bronze medals at the competition.Below are the some successful karatekas from the Philippines and Indonesia.Philippines

The 7th Southeast Asia Karate Federation Championship was held in the northern province of Bac Ninh from April 23 to 25.Nearly 400 sports officials, coaches and athletes from seven countries in the region including Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam were brought together at the event.Host Vietnam secured the top spot with 29 gold medals, 24 silver and 36 bronze medals while Indonesia stood second with nine gold medals followed by team Thailand who bagged seven titles.Cambodian team also brought home five medals from this event. Ly Soueng won a silver and a bronze medal while Chrun Virakbout, Chhay Yuki, and Chhang Srey Phea all added bronze medals to lift Cambodia’s tally to five.The regional competition featured the team and individual categories for both men and women events with four groups of age: 14-15, 16-17, over 18, and under 21 vying for 52 sets of medals.In the last edition of the tournament in 2017, host Indonesia ranked first with 23 golds, followed by Vietnam with 22 golds.Below are some of Thai medalists.Suphaphas Damripit

The Karate 1 - Premier League Rotterdam 2018 was successfully held in the Netherlands from March 16-18.Southeast Asian countries like Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam were among the 69 countries who competed in Rotterdam.More than 600 karatekas participated at this tournament featuring 14 categories.Our Southeast Asian karatekas were among the winners of competition and our medalists were all female athletes.In the team female kata, a superb performance was shown by team Malaysia to clinch the shared bronze medal with Turkey. While the gold medal was captured by Spain while silver medal was received by Germany.In Kumite division, Srunita Sari Sukatendel of Indonesia won the silver medal in the women's -50kg kumite while Ngoan Nguyen Thi of Vietnam won a bronze medal in the women's -61kg kumite.Karate will be featured at the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics.
