A 15-man Philippine
Karate team will represent the Philippines in the 31st Southeast Asian Games on May
12 to 23 in Hanoi, Vietnam.
The squad will be a combination of youth and experience athletes (seven women and eight men) that will try to improve the output of their last SEA Games campaign which was held in their own territory.
The team won two golds, one silver and nine bronze medals in the 2019 Manila
SEA Games and just placed them in 5th overall. Only Junna Tsukii (-50 kg kumite) and Jaime Christine Lim (kumite +61kg) took home the
gold medals.
As part of the preparation to the 31st SEA Games, some athletes competed abroad like in the Asian Karate Championships which was held in
Almaty, Kazakhstan last December 2021 .
Tsukii (-50 kg kumite) and Jamie Lim (kumite -61kg) delivered the
silver medals while Remon Misu (-61kg under 21 kumite), Sakura Alforte
(women's kata and under-21 kata) and John Enrico Vasquez (men's kata
under-21) won the bronze medals in the above mentioned tournament.
Aside from lined up tournaments, a ‘bubble’ training camp in Baguio City was set for the athletes training and conditioning.
Philippines toughest opponent will be host Vietnam in SEA Games this May and of course, Indonesia and Malaysia as rival teams as well.
