SEA Games 2019 News 053: Malaysia Focuses on Taekwondo Heavy Weight Classes


Malaysia is gearing up their taekwondo jins for the forth coming Southeast Asian Games in November.

At the Kuala Lumpur SEA Games 2017, Malaysia won 3 gold medals, one in kyorugi event thru Rozaimi Rozali in the men's 68kg and two gold medals in poomsae.

But that was in their home turf, their last gold medal before 2017SEA Games was in 2009 SEA Games in Vientinne, Laos courtesy of Che Chew Chan in the women's 73kg class.

Based on SEA Games records, most of the gold medals won by Malaysia were in heavy weight class categories in kyorugi events.

And now, Malaysia are looking to compete in the heavier weight class events because of better chances of winning medals.

Their Korean coach Kim Hyeong-seob has selected 22 athletes for training and three of them would be selected to compete in the World Grand Slam China Series on April 26 which offers qualifying points for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

In Southeast Asia, taekwondo powerhouses to beat are Thailand, the Philippines and Vietnam who always on top of the medal tally.
