Malaysia is the only country from Southeast Asia that competed at the 2022 ASBC Asian U22 Boxing Championships which is being held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan that started last January 23 and will conclude on the 29th.
They sent some of its best under-22 boxers in men's division but unfortunately all of them bowed out early in their first round matches.
Malaysia's Halim Izani Sulaiman was defeated by Rasul Akhadov of Tajikistan, 0-5 in the welterweight class (men's 67kg) while fellow Rasdenal Haikal Muhamad lost to Mukhammadadkodir Mamirjonov of Uzbekistan, 0-5 in the flyweight class (men's 51kg).
In the minimumweight class (men's 48kg), Ariffin Qaiyum lost to Djalilov Asilbek of host Uzbekistan, 0-5 while Imdad Muhammad bowed out to another Uzbekistan's bet Shakhzod Muzafarov in the bantamweight class (men's 54kg).
The last boxer from Malaysia was Ibrahim Sheikh Rahmatullah who was defeated by Japan's Shudia Harada in the men's featherweight (57kg) class.
Despite the results, this kind of tournament will make Malaysian boxers more competitive as they experienced the best opponents from the central Asia.
This 1st edition of Asian U22 boxing championships was dominated by host Uzbekistan as most of its boxers enter the gold medal matches.
