SEA Games 2019 News 026: Philippines To Rake Medals in Triathlon Events


The Philippines who struck two gold medals at 2017 Kuala Lumpur SEA Games is confident of dominating the triathlon events this coming Southeast Asian Games which they will host.

Six gold medals are at stake at the 30th SEA Games which will be held in Subic and set on December 1 to 5.

Triathlon and duathlon will have three events each - the men's and women's individual events and the mixed team events.

Of the six gold medals to be competed, four are being targeted by host Philippines according to the president of Triathlon Association of the Philippines, the governing body of the Philippines for triathlon.

With high hopes, team Philippines is expected to enter the names of the recent SEA Games medalists in Malaysia. These are Nikko Huelgas, John Chicano, Kim Mangrobang and Claire Adorna.

If their names are included for the coming biennial meet, their names will also be expected to banner the Philippine flag.

But eyes are on Chicano who is expected to clinch the gold medal in men's individual category. And expected to make a rally against him are the Malaysian and Singaporean triathletes and two-time SEA Games champion Nikko Huelgas.

For duathlon events, names that popped-out are Kim Kilgroe in the women’s, Edward Macalalad, Mark Hosanna, JC Abad, Julius Crisostomo for the men’s division. 

Duathlon made a comeback after the 2007 SEA Games in Thailand and its second time this year.

While triathlon were featured at the 2005, 2007, 2015 and 2017 SEA Games. 
Meanwhile, the deadline for the number of events to be contested at the 2019 SEA Games will be finalized on March 15 according to source.
