Gilas Pilipinas finally gets its victory in the FIBA World Cup after defeating Asian rival China in their final game at the Araneta Coliseum on Saturday night (September 2). The match ended 96-75 in favor of the host with Jordan Clarkson scoring a big 34 points.
The win resulted to a second place finish in Group M for Team Philippines and qualifies them to play in the Olympic Qualifying Tournament for Paris Olympics in 2024.
Before winning over China, Team Philippines was winless in Group A Round 1 (preliminary) where they played against Dominican Republic (81-87), Angola (70-80) and Italy (83-90). They were relegated to 17th-32nd classification where they faced South Sudan (68-87) and China where they got their first win.
Gilas Pilipinas is set to compete in the upcoming Asian Games in Hangzhou, China this September but they will be guided by new coach as Coach Chot Reyes announced that he stepping aside as head coach of Gilas Pilipinas. The announcement was made after the Philippines-China game.
Philippines is bracketed in Group C in Asian Games along with teams from Jordan, Bahrain and Thailand.
