Malaysia will be represented by a total of 677 athletes for the 32nd Southeast Asian Games in Cambodia which will run from May 5 to 17.
The Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) announced last March 13 that aside from the 677 athletes, 237 officals will join them in the biennial meet.
Of the 677 athletes, 390 are classified under the Category A (costs fully borne) while 287 are in Category B (costs borne by association and refunded for medal winners). The number of male athletes are 403 men while there are 274 women athletes.
The biggest contingent for Malaysia is the sport of athletics with 65 man-team. Thirty-four of those are in category-A while the remaining 31 athletes are in category B.
The majority of athletes will compete in team events, including football
(40 athletes), hockey (60 athletes), badminton (20 athletes) and
floorball (40 athletes).
The Malaysian contingent to this year’s Games will be the third largest abroad in terms of athletes. Only the contingents of the 2007 Korat SEA Games (with 820 athletes) and the 2019 Philippines SEA Games (with 772 athletes) were larger.
OCM President Tan Sri Mohamad Norza Zakari said during the ceremony
that the increased number of athletes this year will give younger
athletes exposure before the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand and the 2027 SEA
Games in Malaysia.
Malaysia finished in 6th place overall in the medal tally at the 31st SEA Games 2021 in Vietnam.
