#SEAGames2021 News 001 | Vietnam to Dominate Athletics

Vietnam as host of the 31st Southeast Asian Games is vying for another feat in track and field.

With 47 events at stake, at least 16 gold medals is to be secured by Vietnam at the coming biennial meet that will open on May 12 and will close on May 23.

In 2019 SEA Games in Manila, Vietnam topped the athletics competition with 16 gold medals and at the 2017 SEA Games in Malaysia, they dominated it with 17 gold medals.

Topping the track and field events in the past two consecutive editions, Vietnam has a pressure to maintain its dominance in this sports as host.

Training of 75 Vietnam national athletes are now on going in five different national centers under the supervision of 30 trainers.

Their track runners are expected to deliver most of the gold medals especially in the women's side with Nguyễn Thị Oanh, Phạm Thị Hồng Lệ and Quách Thị Lan as the faces of Vietnam's athletics.

Aside from the intense training, a pre-SEA Games events will test Vietnam's athletics team in April.

Vietnam is not only aiming to dominate SEA Games athletics but also preparing their athletes for September's Asian Games that will be held in China.

Thailand will be the biggest threat of Vietnam in athletics while the Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia can give a rally and surprise for medal podium.
