The YONEX Thailand Open 2021 was held from January 12 to 17 in Bangkok, Thailand where two title events were captured by our Southeast Asian badminton players.
Host Thailand claimed the mixed doubles event courtesy of Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Sapsiree Taerattanachai after defeating Indonesia's Praveen Jordan and Melati Daeva Oktavianti in the finals, 21-3, 20-22 and 21-18. Mixed doubles event was the first event scheduled on the last day of the tournament.
Meanwhile Indonesia bounced back against host Thailand when Greysia Polii and Apriyani Rahayu captured the women's doubles title after defeating host Thailand's Jongkolphan Kititharakul and Rawinda Prajongjai, 21-15 and 21-12.
Unfortunately for Malaysia, Goh V Shem and Tan Wee Kiong failed to capture the men's doubles title when Taipei's Lee Yang and Wang Chi-Lin successfully defeated the duo with the scores of 21-16, 21-23 and 21-19.
Other Southeast Asian players who reached the semifinals were Leo Rolly Carnando and Daniel Marthin of Indonesia who were ousted by Goh and Tan of Malaysia in the semifinals and Indonesia's Anthony Sinisuka Ginting who was defeated by Viktor Axelsen of Denmark and also failed to reach the finals.
The tournament was also participated by Singapore and Myanmar players.
