Chess World Cup 2017

The Chess World Cup 2017 was held in Tbilisi, Georgia, from 2nd to 27th of September 2017. The tournament was a knock-out elimination of 128 wood pushers around the world. Prize money is at stake in this tourney.

Southeast Asian was represented by Le Quang Liem and Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son of Vietnam, Julio Sadorra of the Philippines and Yeoh Li Tian of Malaysia. 

In the first round of the competition, IM Yeoh Li Tian of Malaysia who was seeded 119 was up against India's Viswanathan Anand who was seeded #10. The match ended Tian losing to Anand of India, 1½ - ½. 

In other bracket, Philippines' GM Julio Sadorra (seeded #101) faced the same faith as he was eliminated by Russia's GM Maxim Matlakov (seeded #29)  in the early round. 

Also exiting early of the tournament was GM Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son of Vietnam who seeded #79. He was thrown out by Baskaran Adhiban of India. The match ended with 3½ - 2½ in favor of Adhiban.
And the only one who survived in the first round of the competition from Southeast Asia was Vietnam's GM Le Quang Liem who won over Germany's Vitaly Kunin. Liem who seeded #22 scored 1½ against 0.5 point of Kunin. Liem advances to the second round facing Vidit Santosh Gujrathi of India.

But the second round for Liem was not successful as he surrendered to India's woodpusher. In their first match, India's Gujrathi won over Liem to get 1 point advantage. In their second match, Liem needed to win to equalize the score and to gain another match against Gujrathi. But the second bout was a shared score of .5 each eliminating Liem out of the competition. 
Based on recent international chess tournaments, Vietnam tops Southeast Asian countries that is successful in chess competitions  followed by the Philippines.
