The New Face of SEA Games

The Southeast Asian Sports Federation has decided that from the 33rd Southeast Asian Games in 2025, the biennial meet will feature the Olympic and Asian Games sports (Group 1 & 2) and the host can choose to introduce non-Olympics and traditional sports if at least four countries agree to participate.

In SEA Games, the mandatory sports or Category 1 sports are athletics which includes the track & field events and aquatics which has several disciplines such as swimming, diving, water polo, open swimming and artistic swimming.

This amendment is only effective for the next three editions of Southeast Asian Games - in 2025, 2027 and 2029. The amendment was agreed by the 11 participating nations on the eve of the recently concluded Cambodia SEA Games.

The schedule for the biennial SEA Games, featuring 11 National Olympic Committees, is:
  • 32nd SEA Games, Phnom Penh, Cambodia, May 5-17, 2023
  • 33rd SEA Games, Thailand, 2025
  • 34th SEA Games, Malaysia, 2027
  • 35th SEA Games, Singapore, 2029
  • 36th SEA Games, Laos, 2031
  • 37th SEA Games, Philippines, 2033.
