SEA Games 2019 News 024: Singapore Getting Shaped in Fencing

Singapore raised its level of competitiveness in fencing as its women fencers won medals at the 2019 Asian Junior and Cadet Fencing Championships held at the Al-Ahliyya Amman University in Amman, Jordan.

Leading the Singapore team is veteran and 2017 SEA Games gold medalist Amita Berthier who won the gold medal in women's foil event after defeating Park Ji-hee of South Korea, 15-12, in the junior (Under-20) final.

Before reaching the finals, Berthier won over China's Fu Yingying in the semi finals.

In the team event, Singapore tallied a historic Asian gold medal in women's foil junior (Under-20) beating powerhouse Japan in the finals, 42-38.

With these achievements, Singapore tightens its grip in their campaign to win SEA Games gold medals in women's fencing events especially in the foil event.

But Vietnam and host Philippines are Singapore's arch rivals in this sport and can spoil their bid to win golds.

To keep them shaped and high spirited before the 30th SEA Games in the Philippines, Berthier and her teammates will next turn their focus towards the World Junior and Cadet Fencing Championships in Torun, Poland on April 6 to 19.

Also, they might see in action to major competitions scheduled this year which include the senior Asian Championships in Tokyo on June 13 to 18 and the World Championships to be held in Budapest from July 15 to 23.
Singapore won 2 gold and three bronze medals at the 2017 Southeast Asian Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
