🏸 BWF World Junior Championships 2017

The Blibli.com Yonex-Sunrise BWF World Junior Championships 2017 was successfully held at the GOR Among Rogo Arena in Yogyakarta, Indonesia from Octoer 16 to 22.

Our Southeast Asian badminton players from Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam were among the 64 countries who competed in this world class tournament.

And as usual, the athletes from Indonesia and Thailand gathered another victory for their own country as the two badminton powerhouses bagged world junior championship titles.

Thailand's Kunlavut Vitidsarn claimed the boys' singles title after beating Malaysia's Jun Hao Leong in the 3-set match finals, 17-21, 21-15 and 21-9.  But before that, Vitidsarn defeated Zengze Gao of China in the semifinals.

In the mixed doubles championship, it was all-Indonesian finals after both teams defeated Chinese teams in the semi-finals. Rinov Rivaldy and Pitha Haningtyas Mentari won over their compatriots Rehan Naufal Kusharjanto and Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti. The 3-set scores are 21-23, 21-15 and 21-18.

In the last title event which was the girls' singles event, Gregoria Mariska Tunjung of Indonesia defeated China's Yue Han. The first two sets were lopsided scores with both players winning a set but in the last and deciding game, it was a thrilling 24-22 victory for Tunjung.

After Tunjung's victory, Indonesia has two event titles (Mixed doubles & women's singles) while Thailand has one (boys'singles) at this world junior championships.    

Another Indonesian players who saw action in the final day were Jauza Fadhila Sugiarto and Ribka Sugiarto in the girls' doubles. Unfortunately, the white and red flag team failed to clinch the title event after they were trounced by Korean tandem of Ha Na Baek and Yu Rim Lee. 

Other Southeast Asian athletes who also made in the semi-finals are Rinov Rivaldy and Yeremia Erich Yoche Yacob of Indonesia in the boys' junior doubles.

Badminton will be featured at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Buenas Aires, Argentina.
