14th ASEAN University Games

The 14th ASEAN University Games (AUG) kicked off in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia with the theme “Together We Reach for the Stars”.

A total of 1,789 athletes from different universities of ASEAN countries competed in 22 sports including archery, athletics, badminton, basketball, volleyball as well as netball, sepak takraw, pencak silat, rugby sevens, futsal, taekwando and squash.

The event took place from 11th - 21st of December 2008 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Official Mascot

A1  (Angkasawan)

A1 or in full "Angkasawan" appears to be a very cute character who is friendly, smart, high spirit and strong. The use of an astronaut as the event’s  mascot is due to Malaysia’s achievement to be the first among ASEAN member countries in sending a representative to space.

This symbolize that nothing is impossible if there is strong will and effort. In order to make the mascot in sync with the event, a mortar board is added to reflect the academic excellent and the participation of universities. It is more sporty attire for the mascot to associate it with a sporting event. The logo is carved on to the chest to portray the spirit of 14^th ASEAN University Games throughout the event.

The Malaysian identity is shown through the colours applied (blue, red, white and yellow). Dominantly the colour blue is being utilized to match the university attributes where blue is the symbol of excellence.

Official Song

THE song was inspired by Mohd Zaki Bin Ahmad from Universiti Malaysia Pahang and the lyrics was written by Ahmad Fedtri Bin Yahya from TV3 Malaysia. The Song is about the spirit of sports among athletes to gain success for themselves and their countries. It is the symbol of strong bond between each country in Asia under one flag of AUSC. The arrangement of music was combined with traditional elements in Malaysia and modern elements. Finally, the AUG song was sung by Shahnizal bt. Mohd Arshad (EJA),the ‘Bintang RTM 2004’ winner.
