Number of Southeast Asian Athletes for Tokyo 2020

Southeast Asian countries are actively participating every Olympics. And the number of participating athletes contribute a lot of difference in aiming for Olympic medal. Of course, the more qualified athletes and events, the more chance of winning medals.

This edition of Summer Olympics, the number of qualified athletes has decreased to 16.56% or less 27 athletes compared to the number of athletes in 2016 Rio Olympics. The total number of athletes for 2020 Tokyo Olympics from Southeast Asia is 140.

All nations experienced a decrease in number of athletes except for the Philippines who increases by 6 athletes.

There are many reasons for this decrease but definitely one of these is due to covid-19 pandemic. It limited the athletes of the region to participate in qualifying competitions and also limited their training aspects.

For 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Thailand still topped the chart with 41 athletes according to official website, but by checking it carefully with their entries on the same site it is 42 athletes. (Waranya Sae-tae is also entered in women's BMX)

They are followed by Malaysia with 30 athletes, Indonesia in 3rd spot with 28 athletes, Singapore with 23 athletes, and Philippines with 19 athletes taking the 5th spot.

Vietnam takes the 6th spot with 18 athletes, Laos with 4 athletes (7th) and sharing the 8th spot are Cambodia and Timor leste.

Brunei and Myanmar got the least number of athletes for Tokyo Olympics.

There are 98 female and 42 male competing athletes from Southeast Asian region
