1st Southeast Asian Ouk Chaktrang Championship


 
Cambodia hosted the 1st Southeast Asian Ouk Chaktrang Championship which was held at the Royal University of Phnom Penh from January 7 to 13 with six events in contention.

Host Cambodia dominated the tournament that drew 62 participants from Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and Myanmar.
 
The Cambodian chess players raked three golds, two silvers and three of bronze medals while Vietnam came second place overall with a total of seven medals including two golds, three silvers and two bronze medals.
 
Myanmar came third with one gold and two bronze medals while Thailand ended with 1 silver and couple of bronze medals. Unfortunately, Laos failed to win medal in this tournament.

Ouk Chaktrang or Khmer chess is one of the 38 sports calendared in the 2023 Southeast Asian Games to be hosted by Cambodia. The event was held as a test event for this sport and also to promote the familiarization for other countries about the rules governing the Khmer chess. Cambodia is expected to dominate this sport at the 32nd SEA Games in May.
 
The successful tournament was organized by Cambodia Chess Federation with the cooperation and help of Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports (MoEYS) and Cambodian SEA Games Organising Committee (CAMSOC).
